Early treatment or Phase I is an early round of braces with a very specific aim. Phase I treatment is initiated when there is an orthodontic issue that must be corrected in order to not impeded proper dental development. Examples include anterior/posterior crossbites, early loss of primary (baby) teeth and finger or thumb sucking habits. Most patients will need a second phase (Phase II) of treatment, however the second phase is many times less severe. Early treatment is usually initiated between the ages of 7 and 11 and lasts about 8-12 months, followed by a period of growth observation.
